descrição
On July 11, 1791, the queen, Dona. Maria I, granted her intendant general of the police, Diogo Inacio de Pina Manique, this place, which is now called, in his honour, Manique de Intendente, making it the main village of county.

Diogo Inacio de Pina Manique intended to make Manique do Intendente, a majestic planned city of neoclassical design, an example of enlightened despotism, which would become the headquater of the council and even, perhaps in future, the capital of Portugal.
According to the established urban plan, the centre of the settlement, would be an imposing square of hexagonal shape (baptized the Emperors Square), from where six extensive streets (baptized with names of Roman emperors) would radiate. The plan also established the construction of a mansion for the residence of the Intendente Pina Manique himself.

Alas, the grandious plan was never completed, as Pina Manique was assasinated. Today the grand façade stands as a symbol of an unfulfilled dream!!
