The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Conception is located in Tomar, in the parish of São João Baptista, at the top of a small elevation near the hill of the Castle and the Convent of Christ. This temple, one of the purest examples of the renaissance style in Portugal, was built to serve as a royal pantheon to D. João III, which did not come to pass. It is a National Monument since 1910.
The choice of the royal pantheon of D. João III reveals the influence of a classical funerary conception, which assigns the monarch's place to an acropolis located between the City of Men (the town of Tomar, which the hermitage dominates from the top of a hill) and the City of God (the Convent of Christ). In 1557, the unexpected death of the king, without leaving a testament, did not allow his burial in this temple, and he was buried in the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon.
A Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição situa-se em Tomar, na freguesia de São João Baptista, no cimo de uma pequena elevação próxima do morro do Castelo e do Convento de Cristo. Este templo, um dos mais puros exemplares do estilo renascença em Portugal, foi edificado para servir de panteão régio a D. João III, facto que não se veio a verificar. É Monumento Nacional desde 1910.
A escolha do templo para panteão real de D. João III revela a influência de uma concepção funerária clássica, que destina o lugar do monarca a uma acrópole situada entre a Cidade dos Homens (a vila de Tomar, que a ermida dominava do alto da sua colina) e a Cidade de Deus (o Convento de Cristo). Em 1557, a morte inesperada do rei, sem testamento, não permitiu a sua inumação neste templo, tendo ficado sepultado no Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, em Lisboa.
